Abstract: Biochemical principles of pharmacological action melanin, one of the natural cells pigments, are discussed. Melanin isinvolved into DNA-repair, in the the respiratory chainfunctioning; it modulates such important systems of the cellularmetabolism as photo- end radio protectors. Melanin neutralizesthe effect of products of lipid peroxidation and takes part inneurotransmitter processes under numerous pathological processesdamaging functional neuron structures. Experimental data cannotoften account for the mechanisms of melanin action and thereforesystematic analysis of all the data published on melanin pigmentsis necessary for possible employment of melanins for thepharmacological needs.
