The functional status of glutamate receptors by ethanol treatment

Abstract: A growing buik of experimental data indicates that change of certainneurotransmitter receptors and voltage-dependent ion cannels are characteristicmanifestations accompanying ethanol consumption. A likely target for ethanol effects isthe glutamate receptors. Glutamate is one of major excitatory neurotransmitter in themammalian brain. While the acute application of ethanol inhibits glutamate-inducedcationic currents, chronic treatment with ethanol leads to an up-regulation of glutamatereceptors.
