Role of non-adrenergic regulation in the reaction of pineal gland on acute hypoxia and epithalamin administration to rat

Abstract: The influence of co-administration of a-methyl-p-tyrosine (inhibitor of catecholamine synthesis) and a-+ b -adrenergic antagonists under conditions of acutehypobaric hypoxia or pretreatment with epithalamin on cyclic nuelcotide content in thepineal gland of juvenile male albino rats was investigated. Acute hypoxia was accompaniedby increase of pineal level of cyclic nucleotides and administration of adrenoreceptorantagonists attenuated this effect. Pretreatment of animals with adrenoreceptorantagonists did not influence the effect of acute hypobaric hypoxia on pineal cyclicnucleotide content. This suggests involvement of non-adrenergic mechanisms intoaugmentation of pineal cyclic nucleotide level. Administration of epithalamin caused anincrease of pineal cGMP. Administration of epithalamin to rats pretreated withadrenoreceptor antagonists increased pineal cGMP and to a lesser extent cAMP content. Thelatter suggests that epithalamin effect was not mediated via sympathetic innervation. Itis concluded that non-adrenergic innervation and humoral regulatory mechanisms areonivously involved into activation of pineal gland under conditions of acute stress.
