An apolipoprotein E peptide analog mediates acute clearance of the lipoproteins and decreases the serum cholesterol level

Abstract: Apolipoprotein E mediates lipoprotein binding to the low densitylipoprotein (LDL) receptor and to the LDL receptor-related protein. Apolipoprotein E139-158 peptide increases micellar bindingand endocytosis by hepatocytes. Thelipophilicity of the peptide was increased by modification of its N- terminus by acylationwith palmitic acid ether. The peptide mediates acute clearance of the lipoproteins anddecreases the cholesterol level in rat blood. Total cholesterol level, high densitylipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein B were measured in the serum after intravenous administration of the acylated peptide.
