Abstract: The pharmacological approaches to the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus werereviewed. Special attention was paid to the new therapeutic agents that are able todecrease plasma glucose levels. The possible mechanisms of the hypoglycemic effects arediscussed. Briefly, repaginide, nateglinede and a-glucosidaseinhibitors prevent postprandial hypoclycemia while thiazaolidinediones improve thesensitivity to insulin and vanadium compounds act as an insulin action enhancer.
