Tissue oxygen consumption was studied in 111 patients with alimentary-constitutional and hypothalamic obesities. Polarography was used to study oxygen tension by means of oxygen and ischemic tests. Great impairments of oxygen consumption were found in the tissue of patients with hypothalamic obesity at the initial state, while in alimentary-constitutional obesity they increased during the oxygen test as the obesity progressed and was characterized by impairments of both oxygen supply and consumption, depending on the type of obesity. It is recommended to examine initial pO2 in the patients' skin as one of objective criteria for differential diagnosis of obesity
