Phosphatidylserine containing anticoagulant and heparin mutually increased their anticoagulating activity under conditions of simultaneous treatment in vitro and in vivo. The rate of the potentiation effect depended on a dosage and, apparently, on the ratio of these anticoagulants. The lipid did not react with heparin as shown by spectrophotometric and gel filtration methods as well as by extraction of 131I-phosphatidylserine with chloroform and sedimentation by means of high speed centrifugation. The data obtained suggest that the potentiating effect of the anticoagulants was not due to formation of a complex exhibiting new properties but was caused by effects of these substances at various steps of blood coagulation process.
