Long-term per oral administration of cholesterol into rabbits showed that the content of lipid containing leukocytes might correlate within certain limits with the concentration of blood serum lipids. Very high hyperlipidemia could inhibit the phagocytic activity of RES and, thereby, deteriorate apparently the lipophagocytosis and the lipid transport by leukocytes. At the same time, the long-term feeding of rabbits with cholesterol was shown to cause lymphocytopenia and a decrease in activity of succinate- and alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenases in the circulating lymphocytes.
